children

In October, I was approached in Union Square by a somewhat interesting character who was selling sponsorships for Children International. I was reluctant to A) Give out my credit card to a stranger on the street and B) commit myself, and my checking account, to a weekly payment of 22 dollars a month. However, Gina encouraged me that she had adopted a child and loves the experience so I gave in. "What the heck," I thought. "If it doesn't work out, or I get to a point where I can't afford it, I can cancel at any time.

I now must tell you how embarrassed I am of my skepticism. My adopted boy Diego lives in Guayaquil, Equador. In the first two weeks I was sent a profile of his familiy life, his hobbies and interests, and his picture. That's the catch right there. That picture has been framed on my bedside table since I recieved it. He is ten years old, and quite the faithful pen pal. I have included below a copy of one of the letters and pictures he has sent me. He is such a sweet person, and though I have never met him in person, I am gaining so much more out of this experience than the $22 a month that I am contributing. I encourage you, if you feel so moved to get involved with this organization. I believe they are changing lives.
Also, read their blog for updates on children, what they offer, and to get involved!

it's time we MET

Yesterday was a rainy Sunday, and Nick and I were trying to decide how to spend our afternoon. I perused a few various museum websites and stumbled upon the Met's Flickr. Very interesting things! One thing that caught my eye, which I actually looove is a photo contest they hosted. It was titled after their new up and coming ad campaign, "It's Time We Met." Hundreds of visitors submitted almost 1000 photos and they awarded two 1st prizes, and 5 runners-up. This is so clever!

Winner 1 (babies are always a strong contest tactic, but let's face it. that baby deserves this. precious!)

Winner 2.

And now for the Runners Up.

Three Musketeers.

Artsy Fartsy.

 Mystery Dude.

Old Dude.

And last but not least, my personal favorite, and vote for the number one spot, "Praying for Mercy Dude."

Pics and more info about the contest were found at the Met's website. check it!

wear S L E E V E L E S S

There's something new on the horizon that I think everyone should be aware of... SLEEVELESS.
This is a new fashion company who create one of a kind cuffs with vintage lace, chains, and brooches.
All are handmade and while they are fashioned into certain styles, they are all 100 percent unique.
pics from sleeveless 2010 ad campaign.
And the best part of all, they are based out of Nashville!

Let's face it. I love anything vintage! And these cuffs really are attacking fashion in an interesting new way that I believe to be timeless.

look 1, look 2

One of my new favorite sites is lookbook.
I really love seeing what people are wearing from all over the world! Fashion students from London, Milan, and Paris all display their most killer looks. And of course there are weirdies all over the world who are there to offer bad outfits and laughs (always appreciated).

chivalry

Today a man let me walk ahead of him onto the train at the 34th street stop. It was such a far cry from my first post's account of a subway experience. Maybe chivalry isn't dead after all.

It's amazing how something so small could make the biggest difference in your day.

It looks like New York has triumphed again.

fifty and fabulous (50 degrees that is...)

For some reason, today was kind of a brutal day at work. Not only were we slow today, but it was 58 degrees outside today!! All I did was stare out the window and dream of running down 65th Street one block to Central Park and hiding for the rest of the day. Unfortunately, we are in a recession and good jobs are scarce. I did however walk a couple of blocks to grab a slice at my lunch break. Sooo nice to feel the 50s again! I spent the rest of my afternoon wondering what I was to do tonight since Jake picked Vienna last week and put me out of my misery. What a waste of my emotions and time.

But anyways, speaking of walking, yesterday Ginnie and I walked the High Line just as I said we would. But then we took it a step farther and walked all the way down the West Side Highway to Battery Park. It was a little longer that we had anticipated but it was such a nice day! And I found it to be sooo inspiring!!

regular garage door?

i think not!

garage door in the west village. plus a courtenay original textile.

this was on exhibit at the High Line yesterday.
 how beautiful? i know, right?

and it inspired this.
what if you could have your own patterned subway seat? design your own? i personally love the idea.

HIGH LINE

In 1847 New York authorized street level trains down Manhattan's west side.
In the 1930's the railway was actually put into construction.

In 2001 The Design Trust for Public Space provides a fellowship for architect Casey Jones to conduct research and outreach for "Reclaiming the High Line," a planning study jointly produced by the Design Trust and Friends of the High Line, which lays out planning framework for the High Line's preservation and reuse.

Basically, over time the High Line train became somewhat obsolete and bit by bit was shut down. So in 2008, they started design plans for a park to re-invent the High Line. My friend Alex told me about the High Line at work yesterday. I said to him, "I feel like turning an old railway line into a park is such a 'New York thing to do' ". He has lived in New York for many years and I consider him somewhat of an expert on the city in general. His reply was simple but somewhat profound to me: "That is something that New York and New Yorkers are known for. We are always re-inventing ourselves." Cool huh?

So, considering that it is the first time NYC has seen 50 degrees since I've been here, I W I L L be outside today. I have a feeling there will be much inspiration found today at the high line. Stay tuned for my findings!!

G A G A

A girl’s got to use what she’s given and I’m not going to make a guy drool the way a Britney video does. So I take it to extremes.
